What I think of LOST after 94hrs

This post is LONG overdue, so my appologies. Even after a crazy LOST marathon like the one we completed the other week, you’d think we’d be tired of LOST at this point… but NO. I’d probably do it all over again if only I had the vacation days to spare… and then there’s that whole “looking like a big degenerate” thing.

By now Alex, Mike and myself have a unique perspective on LOST having just watched every episode back to back over a 94+hr period. An achievement which to date has never been matched by anyone in the history of the world! So THANK YOU LOST for being intriguing and just fucking awesome enough to withstand 94hrs of you (actually it was really 87hrs of pure LOST watching, the other 7hrs were our Guinness 5min/hr breaks).

People keep asking us whether we managed to soak in every moment of LOST and for the most part I “think” we did. Yes, towards the end and about 85hrs of little sleep my brain was misfiring, Mike repeatedly walked into a wall thinking it was the restroom till the bartender redirected him, and our tempers were attached to a somewhat short fuse. The main thing sleep deprivation and 94hrs of TV watching did was blur together the lines between episodes, but I think that could also be more a testament to how cohesive the entire LOST story is than how brain-muddled we might have been. I was surprised and impressed with how well LOST flowed together from the moment it began right up to the end. All 94hrs felt like one giant cohesive story, elegantly and meticulously woven together. Again… thank you LOST! (more…)

LOST-A-THON in the media

Well LOST-A-THON is over and here’s what people said about us. Neither Alex, Mike or myself ever expected our little charity event would be such a hit and receive so much publicity but hey, LOST fans really are the best! Here’s a collection of some articles and interviews from our 4 days of LOST immersion.

NPR - Six Years Of ‘Lost’ Time? Fans Brace For The Finale

“Stick your head out the window on Sunday night and listen carefully — you may hear the collective cheer (or groan) of millions of Lost fans watching the ABC series’ finale. Fans are nervous that six years of obsessively watching the science-fiction thriller have all been in vain.

“I will be disappointed if it’s not a roller coaster ride,” says Alex Green, who is taking part in an intenseLost-a-thon on the streets of Manhattan. (He and his buddies are watching all 120 episodes of the show … in four days.)”… more by ROBERT SMITH

ABC – ‘Lost’ Finale: The End Is Here

“When Oceanic Flight 815 crashed on the first episode of “Lost” in 2004, a perplexing plot and a mosaic of complex characters — all with secret pasts — were thrown together, along with some polar bears on the tropical island and a few miracles. “Lost” sparked an unrivaled cult following.

Far from the island, “Lost” fans Mike Berlin, Alex Green and Aaron Rosenthal are on a survival mission of their own this week: They are attempting a Guinness World Record for the most hours spent watching the supernatural-tinged show.

“We love ‘Lost’ and for me it remains the only television show I’ve seen in its entirety,” Rosenthal said.“… more by By JEREMY HUBBARD and ELICIA DOVER

LOST-A-THON success

photo taken by Anthony Quintano http://www.quintanomedia.com

We are still in recovery mode but wanted to make a quick post updating everyone on the success of LOST-A-THON.

We ended the LOST season finale (which we agreed was a nice way to close out LOST), having completed our 94hr, 51-minute television marathon!  Now we just need to send off our documents to Guinness World Records for approval as new world record holders.

Many thanks go out to our volunteers, sponsors, and supporters around the world for your encouragement to make this a success. We’d especially like to thank Professor Thom’s for the space, Best Buy for the equipment, Livestream for sending the event around the world, Linode.com for fixing the site after Damon Landelof’s tweet crashed it, MyJumpsuit for making us look cool, JakPrints for publicity, Rockstar, Think Gum, and Function Drinks for keeping us awake, and Chipotle, Professor Thom’s and Papa Lima for feeding us.

We’ll be posting pictures and videos shortly, so if you have some please send to lostathon@gmail.com and we’ll add them to the site!  We’ll also be posting info on how to buy limited edition t-shirts and event passes too.

Even though the LOST-A-THON is complete, our charities still need your support.  We’ll continue taking donations through the end of the week.  Please be generous and donate now.

Namaste,

Aaron, Alex & Mike

LOST-A-THON Rules

Many of you have been asking what the rules are for LOST-A-THON. Here’s a brief rundown:

We’re watching all episodes from The Pilot culminating with the live series finale back-to-back. Guinness rules allow 5 minute breaks per one hour of television watched and we are allowed to build up this rest time. Our strategy is to watch twelve or so hours in a row and take longer breaks so we can rest. It’s been working pretty well so far!

We are allowed to eat and drink while watching. However, we have to use break time to talk on the cell phone, go to the bathroom, leave the TV area, etc.

Thanks for all of your questions. Please be sure to visit the donate page and donate to the charities here.

DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS

When it came time to choose what organization to donate to, the decision was easy one for me.  Love ‘em or hate ‘em; at some point we all need a little TLC from an MD with a steady hand… not named Christian Shephard.  All joking aside, Medecins Sans Frontieres a.k.a. Doctors Without Borders provides support to communities, world wide, in the most dire and difficult situations imaginable.

The abridged origin of the organization is that it was started in 1971 by a team of doctors and journalists who believed in the same principle that all people have the right to medical care regardless of who they are, what they believe, and where they are located.  Turns out a lot of people felt the same.  With more than 25,000 experts and intrepid volunteers deployed around the world, Doctors Without Borders has evolved into the type of association that can bring hope to us all and that speaks volumes about the human heart’s capacity for compassion – even in trying times as these.  In 1999, Medecins Sans Frontieres was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of its ‘continuous effort to provide medical care in acute crises, as well as raising international awareness of potential humanitarian disasters’.

Now I’ll try not to get too Sally Struthers on everyone here (after all I’m not that good looking), but LOST-A-THON is serious about its worthy causes.  Most of us can (and will) go on debating our theories about the questions answered and unanswered poised by LOST, but in this moment of frothy enjoyment as our favorite show comes to a close, we have an opportunity as a community to come together and show our strength in numbers and support.  There has never been a show as polarizing as LOST (we’ve all had are fair share of debates and arguments with the haters), but when all is said and done if all us pitch in and come together there will be nothing that naysayers will be able to deny about the positive and real outcome that this show produced.  So as the series wraps up, donate and feel better about being part of community of people who enjoy a well told and engaging story and at the same time give damn about their fellow woman and man – even those who prefer American Idol.

Support the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation

When it came time to pick charities for LOST-A-THON I instantly knew Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation (CDRF), an organization I’ve supported for years, was a perfect fit for our little LOST marathon. We wanted to select charities that had both a personal connection with ourselves as well as with LOST. So I picked CDRF, an organization dedicated to curing spinal cord injury by funding innovative research, and improving the quality of life for people living with paralysis through grants, information and advocacy.

Whether we thought it was luck, fate, destiny, or a bitter sweet story that ended in tragedy, John Locke’s paralysis was cured the moment Oceanic flight 815 crashed on the island. A man once wheelchair bound was no more. John Locke, who struggled with the limitations of his own paralysis, brought on by the hand of his own father who threw him out an 8th floor window, miraculously found his feet due to the mysterious and unexplainable powers of the island. But not everyone is lucky enough to find a magic island that heals all, or even a spinal surgeon who works miracles, but in the real world when it comes to living with and curing paralysis the true magic can be found in the hands of CDRF. The Nature Conservancy Loves Islands

As one of the three candidates attempting the LOST-A-THON, I’ve been thinking about what makes LOST so awesome.  To me, the fact that these people could survive on a deserted island with enough fresh water, fruit, and wild boar for years is amazing.  And the dreamlike scenery of the island makes the experience more incredible.

Tropical environments are disappearing quickly (just like the LOST island), but the people at the Nature Conservancy are working to help.  They are spending millions of dollars on conservation efforts specifically on islands to help protect these LOST-like environments.

Help LOST-A-THON achieve our fundraising goal by donating to the Nature Conservancy!  And if you live in NYC, contact us about being a volunteer for the LOST-A-THON!

Calling all NYC LOST fans

LOST-A-THON is just around the corner and we need volunteers to help make sure our Guinness guidelines are met throughout ALL 94hrs of the LOST-A-THON.

LOST-A-THON will be held at Professor Thoms at 219 2nd Ave, New York City. Volunteer shifts are 4hrs each during which you’ll be responsible for logging our breaks, making sure we adhere to Guinness rules (that means making sure we don’t cheat), and you’ll also help us sell merchandise for charity. This is your chance to catch up on a good 4hrs+ (multiple shifts are welcome) of LOST. If anyone’s planning to hang out at a bar between May 20-23rd you might as well come chill with us during LOST-A-THON.

If you’re interesting in volunteering just send us an email via the contact page and we’ll send over our signup. And don’t forget, our effort to watch a ridiculous amount of LOST is all for charity. So make your donation and tell all your friends.

34 days

We kicked off the LOST-A-THON website this week and already I’m thrilled people are actually finding their way over to our little island amongst the www abyss.

LOST-A-THON has been mulling about our heads for a while now and at last our site is open for business… fundraising that is! We’re a mere 34 days away from the big event… our 121 episode, 94 hour LOST fest. I’m sure we’re not the only LOST fans who’ve contemplated watching every LOST episode back-to-back, and for those who actually did the math you’ll know LOST is only ~86hrs.. our LOST-A-THON is 94 hours including our much needed Guinness allotted 5 minutes of break per hour, which can also accumulate for that 10 minute shower I’ll undoubtedly need after a day of intense LOST observation.
